Louisiana man accused of aggravated rape, faces charges

Louisiana, like most states, categorizes criminal charges as either felony or misdemeanor. Compared to a felony, a misdemeanor can seem like a slap on the wrist. A felony, on the other hand, can land an accused individual in prison for long time if he or she is convicted. These charges can pertain to criminal offenses such as rape, robbery, terrorist actions and weapons possessions, to name a few. Regardless of which felony a person is accused of, he or she often faces an uphill battle to acquittal.

A Sulphur, Louisiana, man is facing such a fight after being charged with nine counts of aggravated rape. According to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, the charges stem from allegations that the accused sexually assaulted a mentally disabled woman. An investigator stated the 50-year-old man allegedly had sexual intercourse with the 25-year-old victim on several occasions over a period of 10 months leading up to the assault incident, which supposedly happened three months ago. The man was recently taken into custody and is being held in the Calcasieu Correctional Center on a $1.8 million bond.

Felony charges are very serious and can be quite daunting. However, an accused person should not be disheartened. Calcasieu Parish residents charged with a crime should know that a fair trial is ensured and that he or she has legal rights. One of those rights is the right to legal representation. A criminal law professional can help prepare a compelling defense on behalf of an accused individual by examining if the investigation violated any of the accused's civil rights, questioning the legitimacy of the prosecution's claims, and putting forth the defendant's side of the story.

Since these charges carry harsh, life-altering penalties that can ruin an individual's life, one who faces criminal charges should not hesitate to obtain a competent legal defense.. An accused person should use all the possible legal remedies in pursuit of reduced or dismissed charges.
