The Estate Succession Process In Louisiana

When a person dies, generally a succession is required. Succession is the process of transferring the decedent’s assets to his heirs or legatees. In other jurisdictions, this process is called “Probate.” If a person dies with a will, the assets are transferred according to the will. If a person dies without a will, Louisiana law determines which relatives receive which share of the deceased person’s assets.

Louisiana law requires that at the time someone dies, certain steps must be taken for the orderly disposition of their assets, especially in the event of a will. Generally, you must inventory all assets and determine liabilities, ensure payment of any taxes and debts and distribute the assets according to the will or Louisiana law.

Lake Charles, Louisiana: Lorenzi & Barnatt, L.L.C.

Since 1990, we have served our Lake Charles community with integrity and a commitment to legal excellence.

Our probate administration practice is led by attorney Theresa Ann Barnatt, who is board-certified in estate planning and administration by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization.

Our law firm provides legal guidance and understanding to personal representatives as an estate moves through the succession process. Our attorneys also give legal advice to potential heirs when a relative dies without a will.

We advise clients regarding which property is included in the estate and how the distribution process works according to the law or the decedent’s will.

If you, or someone you know, is the person responsible for the estate of a loved one we will help determine if the estate can be settled through a simple succession process or if the estate is more complex and should be placed under an administration proceeding.

The death of a loved one is difficult enough without trying to navigate through a succession process alone.
