On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2013 | Uncategorized |

Negative issues concerning politicians can be a cause of heated discussions here in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. Many people are aware that a single mistake can be costly to a public official’s political career.

A former state legislator is facing considerable challenges in a case alleging him of tax fraud. The official, who resigned from his office recently, pleaded not guilty to the allegations in a federal court. Prosecutors claimed that the man’s tax return disclosed less than what his business earned in 2006. Additionally, they allege that he delayed filing his 2007 tax return in 2011 and did not file one in 2008 at all. The former representative is facing a felony citation for tax fraud and two misdemeanor charges for his failure to file tax returns.

If he is found guilty of the felony charge, the official may spend 3 years in jail and pay a $100,000 fine. The misdemeanor charges carry a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Charges of fraud often cause the accused person’s reputation to be ruined, and his or her integrity to be compromised. In this case, the person’s reputation will be greatly affected by the situation. Many people understand that filing a tax return is a civil obligation, but if a person fails to do so, many people may prejudge the person harshly. Errors in filing taxes and making financial reports can happen and it is important to understand those factors in such a situation.

Since penalties and fines are significant, it may be imperative that the person accused of fraud seek legal guidance. In this regard, the accused person may wish to consult a legal professional for options that can bring about the best results in the case.
