Drug offenses are taken seriously by law enforcement and the courts throughout the country, Louisiana included. Although they may be legal when prescribed by a physician, some drugs are prohibited from being sold without a prescription. Whether an illegal substance, such as methamphetamine or a prescription-only drug, a person caught possessing and using such drugs can face serious consequences that include prison time and substantial fines. These possible consequences await three Louisiana men who are being accused of harboring drugs with the intent to distribute, according to prosecutors in Iberia Parish.
The Narcotics Division of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office recently carried out a search warrant on a residence in Jeanerette, approximately 100 miles southeast of Lake Charles. Agents allegedly found 30 grams of marijuana, more than 200 doses of several different illegally acquired prescription drugs, 12 pounds of marijuana and around 30 grams of synthetic marijuana. The search also yielded more than $10,000 in cash, four underage children and two handguns.
Three men, ages 26, 31 and 47, were arrested and charged with drug possession, intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. They were also cited for possessing firearms, among various other charges.
Drug charges carry serious repercussions. Anyone convicted of such charges faces a prison term and serious fines. After prison, an ex-convict can have trouble reintegrating into the community because many citizens are wary of dealing with people who have spent time in jail or prison. This can lead to difficulties in finding a job. A conviction can also place enormous stress on a family and any friends of the accused.
To avoid similar consequences, a Louisiana resident facing drug charges should speak with a criminal law professional. The law professional can prepare a strong and aggressive defense on behalf of the accused.
