Driver faces criminal charges re 2018 hit-and-run wreck

On Behalf of | Jan 31, 2019 | Criminal Defense |

A man who allegedly fled the scene of an accident was recently apprehended by Louisiana police. Facing multiple criminal charges — including careless operation and hit and run — he is apparently still in police custody. Authorities also charged him with drug-related crimes.

According to police, the accident happened back in Nov. 2018, when a 26-year-old driver rear-ended another vehicle. The driver who allegedly caused the accident initially stopped and spoke with the other driver. At one point he pulled out his ID and handed it over to the other person, but then purportedly ran away from the scene. He left his vehicle on the side of the highway where the wreck occurred.

When police arrived at the scene they performed a search of the abandoned vehicle. In it they found a syringe that they believed contained drugs, and further testing apparently revealed that the substance was methamphetamine. Police say they used the driver’s ID that he had left behind to determine his identity, and then issued a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested on Jan. 13, 2019.

Charged with careless operation, hit and run, driving without insurance, no seat belt, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, the man could potentially be facing some rather serious consequences. It is not uncommon for Louisiana defendants who are convicted on these types of criminal charges to face significant jail time and hefty fines. Minimizing these types of impacts are often a priority for defendants, so taking timely action to review all charges and evidence can be a good place to start.
