Police arrest man accused of causing drunk driving wreck

Louisiana police say they arrested a man who allegedly collided with a police cruiser in Lake Charles. Authorities filed multiple charges against the driver, including at least one for drunk driving. The State Police trooper who was involved in the accident did not suffer any serious injuries.

The collision happened at approximately 5:30 a.m. At that time, the trooper had parked his vehicle on I-210's shoulder and had activated his emergency lights. He was apparently working a detail for traffic safety at the time, but it is unclear what this entailed or whether the trooper was in the vehicle when the driver allegedly veered out of his lane.

Police say the driver crossed multiple lanes of traffic before drifting onto the shoulder and colliding with the police vehicle. After the wreck he was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. However, police say that he provided a false name and ID to police officers. Authorities apparently quickly worked out the man's identity.

The driver who allegedly caused the wreck is supposedly an undocumented immigrant, which might be why he initially provided police with a fake ID. He is now facing charges for not only a second offense DWI, but also for carelessly operating a motor vehicle, lack of a driver's license, resisting an officer with a false identity and more. Additional charges might be filed soon.

When a driver in Lake Charles is accused of drunk driving, there's typically less time to act than the accused individual might think. These types of criminal charges can proceed fairly quickly, and drivers generally have little time to act in order to preserve their driving privileges. Timely action can be essential in such cases, so defendants should consider how seeking help could potentially influence their cases going forward.
